About Inmagic PowerPack

Inmagic PowerPack is a set of three services that can run under Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows XP Professional. These services are Importer, Checker, and Updater. Inmagic PowerPack Lite has only two services: Checker and Updater.

You use the services on Inmagic DB/TextWorks textbases to help automate management and maintenance tasks.

  • Importer automatically and continually imports files (in the background) into one or more textbases.

  • Checker analyzes textbase integrity and optionally fixes some types of problems. The Checker analyzes information in the textbase files and writes problems to a check (.CHK) file. If the textbases are problem-free, you can proceed with confidence. If errors remain, the check file recommends recovery procedures.

  • Updater automatically and continually posts deferred updates to one or more textbases, using background processing. Deferred updates are records that were added, edited, or deleted while Deferred indexing was in effect. Deferred updates are kept in a queue until they are posted (by the Updater or manually), at which time the indexes are updated.

You configure and run each service independently. Each service has its own dialog box and help file.

What's New in this Version?

Each new and enhanced feature for the PowerPack services is listed here. Where applicable, you are directed to documentation for more information.

  • With version 8.00, you now access the services through menu shortcuts. For example, to access the Importer service after you have installed PowerPack, click the Windows Start button, then choose Programs>Inmagic Applications>PowerPack>Importer. Previously, you accessed the service through the Windows Control Panel.

  • The DBIMPSRV.INI, DBCHKSRV.INI, and DBUPDSRV.INI files (for the Importer, Checker, and Updater, respectively) are now located in the PowerPack installation folder. Previously, the files were installed in the Windows System folder. If you are upgrading and these services and the DB/TextWorks installation folder are on the same machine, the settings from existing DBIMPSRV.INI, DBCHKSRV.INI, and DBUPDSRV.INI files will be added to the new one. This will ensure that any changes you made to the services through their .INI files are applied to the upgraded services. If they are not on the same machine and you want your existing settings to be applied, you must manually add the settings you want from your existing DBIMPSRV.INI, DBCHKSRV.INI, and DBUPDSRV.INI files in the Windows System folder to the new DBIMPSRV.INI, DBCHKSRV.INI, and DBUPDSRV.INI files in the PowerPack installation folder.

  • The Importer service can now import XML files. This includes those output by Inmagic Gatherer (which is a separate product you can purchase for use with DB/TextWorks). For more information, see the "Importing XML Files" topic in the online help for the Importer.

  • When using the Importer service to import XML files, the XSL style sheet used during the import is now included in the Inmagic PowerPack Importer Information dialog box. On the Inmagic PowerPack Importer Settings dialog box, click the Importer Information button to open the Inmagic PowerPack Importer Information dialog box.

Installing Inmagic PowerPack

Note: You install PowerPack Lite through the use of the DB/TextWorks installation CD-ROM or download. To install PowerPack Lite, follow the installation instructions included in the DB/TextWorks installation and upgrade notes document (that was provided with that product).

You install PowerPack through its installation CD-ROM or download. The following installation instructions are for PowerPack.

The machine where you install PowerPack should have access to the DB/TextWorks textbases that you want to maintain, and should not need to be rebooted frequently.

  1. Log in as Administrator.

  2. Insert the Inmagic PowerPack Setup CD-ROM into the drive OR follow the instructions on the download page.

  3. Setup should automatically start. If not, from the Start menu, choose Run. On the Run dialog box, type the CD-ROM drive letter, followed by the SETUP command (for example, E:\SETUP), then click OK.

  4. Follow the prompts for the installation program to specify the requested information (your name, serial number, and so forth) and to specify the folder where you want PowerPack installed.
  5. Note: If you are upgrading from an earlier version of PowerPack, install version 8.00 in the same folder as the earlier version (for example: C:\Program Files\Inmagic\PowerPack). When a message appears asking if you want to overwrite the earlier PowerPack files, click Yes.

Using Inmagic PowerPack

To open the dialog boxes for the PowerPack services (for example, to configure them), choose the following from the Windows Start menu:

  • Programs>Inmagic Applications>PowerPack>Checker

  • Programs>Inmagic Applications>PowerPack>Importer

  • Programs>Inmagic Applications>PowerPack>Updater

To start/stop the PowerPack services:

The Importer, Checker, and Updater are Windows services, but you should not use the Windows Computer Management window to start and stop them. Instead, use the Start and Stop buttons on their respective dialog boxes. However, if you want any of these services to start automatically whenever the system is rebooted, use the Computer Management window to set a service to run automatically. (During installation, the services are set to run manually.)

Note: We strongly recommend you stop the Importer before rebooting, especially if it is during the "Run During Interval..." period.

For information about using the services, see their individual online help files.

Uninstalling Inmagic PowerPack

These steps apply to PowerPack Lite also.

  1. Log in as Administrator on the machine where PowerPack is installed.

  2. Stop all PowerPack services (Checker, Updater, and Importer) through their respective dialog boxes.

  3. Use the Add/Remove Programs icon on the Windows Control Panel window to remove PowerPack.

Note: You may be prompted to reboot your machine following the uninstall.
