About Genie

This section provides new customers with information about the Inmagic Genie application and how to start using it. Upgrade customers may want to start with What's New in this Version?.

Textbases provided with the application

The Genie textbases are designed for the unique needs of information professionals.

Important! Due to the intricate coding and functions that make the application work, you should not delete or hide any of the fields in these textbases. For the same reason, you should not assign passwords to these textbases (except GENIEKEY). You must not rename the Genie textbases. The application works only with the textbases provided.

CATALOG contains one record for each title (book, journal, and so forth) in the library. Transactions involving the individual copies are managed in separate textbases (SERIALS and LOANS).

Links between the textbases allow information to be shared, without requiring duplication of effort.

After you install the textbases on your Microsoft SQL Server (a manual part of the Genie installation process) and set up appropriate security settings for the textbases and Windows permissions for Genie users, all you have to do is load your own records into the textbases. Typically, you may load the initial set of records into the application through the bulk import function in Inmagic® CS/TextWorks (which is a component of Inmagic® Content Server). Thereafter, you can add records directly with the Genie application. Once records are loaded, library staff and end users can start searching your catalog to find records through the Genie application. Library staff, in addition and depending on any permission settings that may be in place, can reserve items, order materials, route serial issues, display and print the results, and much more.

Pointing to the Genie textbases

Note that during the installation process, Setup may have updated the ICSWeb.INI file to point to the empty Genie textbases. If you restored the provided backup file sets to the recommended location, this would be C:\Program Files\Inmagic\Genie\Textbases. If the sample textbases were installed and you want to use them to become familiar with the Genie application, you must update the ICSWeb.INI file to point to the sample textbases. If you restored the provided backup file sets to the recommended location, this would be C:\Program Files\Inmagic\Genie\Textbases\Sample. The ICSWeb.INI file is located in the installation folder for Inmagic® CS/WebPublisher PRO (which is a component of Inmagic® Content Server). You may have to work with the Web server administrator to update the ICSWeb.INI file.

Important! Remember to update the ICSWeb.INI file to point to the real Genie textbases after you are done with the sample textbases. You cannot point to the real and sample textbases in the ICSWeb.INI file at the same time; only one set of Genie textbases can be specified in the INI file.

Note that if, while trying to update the ICSWeb.INI file, Setup detected any textbase with the same name as a Genie textbase, Setup did not update the ICSWeb.INI file for the Genie application. You will have to update the ICSWeb.INI file yourself. Use a text editor (such as Microsoft Notepad) to update the ICSWeb.INI file. Before doing this, ensure that the existing textbase(s) with the same names are not in production (actively being searched through Web browsers). If they are, the name collision will have to be resolved, by renaming your existing textbases.

About the sample textbases

The installation CD-ROM or electronic download (depending on how you receive the product) includes a set of the Genie textbases containing sample data. If the sample textbases were installed, then you can use them to familiarize yourself with the functions and reports in the Genie application.

Regarding pointing the Genie application to the set of textbases you want to use, see Pointing to the Genie textbases.

Accessing the application

After you have completed the installation of the Genie software and textbases (per its installation notes document), you can access the application through Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later, with cookies enabled.

Out of the box, access to the Genie application is controlled through the roles available for the application.

Note: We suggest you use a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels on your Web browser machine, which you can set through the Windows Display Properties dialog box.

For library staff

Open Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later and point to http://<WebServerName>/InmagicGenie. Fill in the host name of your Web server where the Genie application resides. The InmagicGenie virtual directory was created when the Genie application was installed.

Log in by typing a valid user name and password. Note that the role login names can be changed by the administrator.

Note: See the Inmagic Genie Security Notes for the out-of-the-box username/password combinations. We recommend you change the passwords at your earliest convenience. To change a login name or password, use the Manage Security & Logins function (choose Other>Manage Security & Logins) and see the Inmagic Genie Security Notes.

For end users

With Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later and with cookies enabled, end users can search your catalog and view Summary or Full Display pages (the latter can optionally include circulation information). They can also request, print, download, or send as e-mail a selected list of items. Note that the list of actions exposed in the InfoCart can be limited to suit the library's preferences.

Create a link on your intranet/extranet pointing to http://<WebServerName>/InmagicGenie/opac.aspx.

Fill in the name of your Web server where the Genie application resides. The InmagicGenie virtual directory was created when the Genie application was installed.

Functions performed with CS/TextWorks

There are several functions that require using CS/TextWorks. This section tells you how to perform these functions.

You will have to use CS/TextWorks to do the following:

To open a Genie textbase on the desktop

  1. Open CS/TextWorks. From the Start menu, choose Programs>Inmagic Applications>Content Server>CSTextWorks.

  2. Open a Genie textbase. Choose File>Open and navigate to where your Genie textbases are located and select one of them (for example, Catalog.CBA).

To import MEDLINE XML files

The Genie application includes a transform that you can use to import MEDLINE XML files. A bibliographic database created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), MEDLINE (Medical Literature, Analysis, and Retrieval System Online) contains references to journal articles in life sciences, especially in the area of biomedicine. You must perform these steps in CS/TextWorks.

  1. Open CS/TextWorks. From the Start menu, choose Programs>Inmagic Applications>Content Server>CSTextWorks.

  2. Open the Genie CATALOG textbase. Choose File>Open, navigate to where your Genie textbases are located, and select Catalog.CBA.

  3. Choose File>Import and select the file containing the MEDLINE XML records on the Select Import File dialog box.

  4. On the Import Options dialog box, do the following:

    • On the File Import tab:

      1. Select the XML option button.

      2. Select the Specify XSL Transform in File option button.

      3. Click the Select Transform File button and the MEDLINE.XSL file (which was installed in the Textbases subfolder of the main Genie installation folder).

    • On the Validation tab: Select the Accept Overrides & Update Validation Lists or Accept Overrides option button, as applicable. We recommend you accept overrides because one of the fields populated from the MEDLINE records is the CatSubjects field in the CATALOG textbase. It has an associated validation list. If you do not accept overrides, the incoming records will most likely be rejected.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Review the settings you selected on the message box that appears, and click Yes if your settings are correct.

  7. Click OK to dismiss the completion message.

Tip! Some MEDLINE records may not adhere to the MEDLINE DTD, which results in a malformed XML file. If the incoming XML file contains flaws, the entire file may be rejected, not just the flawed records within it. If this occurs, try downloading smaller sets of records in an attempt to isolate and exclude the flawed records.

Where do I start?

To start, you may want to do the following:

  1. Add records to the textbases. You can do this manually in the Genie application. Alternatively, you can import your records from an ASCII text file with CS/TextWorks (choose File>Import).

  2. Set up the e-mail function if you plan to use it. To learn how to do this, see the Genie online help.

  3. Set up the security model you plan to use. To learn how to do this, see the Inmagic Genie Security Notes.

  4. Perform your routine library operations. Use the data-entry tips provided on the Genie application. Look at the help topics for specific functions for which you may want guidance (for example, how to set up an arrival pattern, how to add someone to a reserve list). When you do a search, click the Help link in the Search Tips area to access a help topic that provides details on the various methods you can use to perform a search.

  5. Use the various configuration files to change the Genie interface (for example, add boxes to search pages or change report formatting). To learn how to use these configuration files, see the Inmagic Genie Technical Notes.

After installing the software and loading your records into the textbases, you and your end users are ready to use the Genie application. End users can use it to search your online catalog. Library staff can use it to perform functions related to catalog, serials, loans, suppliers, borrower maintenance, and interlibrary lending. The graphical user interface for the Genie application is straightforward and intuitive.

Remember that the Genie application provides you with sample textbases that contain sample records with which you can practice using the product.
