About Genie

This section provides new customers with information about the Inmagic Genie application and how to start using it. Upgrade customers may want to start with What's New in this Version?.

Textbases provided with the application

The Genie textbases are designed for the unique needs of information professionals.

Important! Due to the intricate coding and functions that make the application work, you should not delete or hide any of the fields in these textbases. For the same reason, you should not assign passwords to these textbases (except GENIEKEY). You must not rename the Genie textbases. The application works only with the textbases provided.

  • BORROWER. Use to store the names and addresses of the end users of your information center.

  • CATALOG. Use to catalog all kinds of information resources and as an online catalog for your end users.

  • GENIEKEY. Use to support the security feature for the application.

  • ILL. Use, in conjunction with the ILLENDER textbase, to manage interlibrary loan requests.

  • ILLENDER. Use, in conjunction with the ILL textbase, to store the names, addresses, and policies of the organizations that loan materials to you.

  • ITEMS. Use to store information about physical copies (for example, bar codes, location, and so forth). The ITEMS textbase makes it possible to do multi-branch lending. Loans circulate items, not titles. This textbase also supports circulation of Serial issues.

  • LOANS. Use to track circulation of information resources.

  • ORDERS. Use to create and receive orders, and to claim materials not received.

  • RESERVES. Use to keep track of your reserve list. There is one record per reserve, which is a person waiting for an item.

  • SERIALS. Use as a serials management tool, to check in recently received issues, route them, or claim them from the supplier when they have not been received.

  • SUPPLIER. Use to store the names and addresses of all your suppliers.
  • TOC. Use to store the file names and (optionally) full text of Table of Contents images or documents.

CATALOG contains one record for each title (book, journal, and so forth) in the library. Transactions involving the individual copies are managed in separate textbases (SERIALS and LOANS).

Links between the textbases allow information to be shared, without requiring duplication of effort.

After you install the textbases on your Microsoft SQL Server (a manual part of the Genie installation process) and set up appropriate security settings for the textbases and Windows permissions for Genie users, all you have to do is load your own records into the textbases. Typically, you may load the initial set of records into the application through the bulk import function in Inmagic® CS/TextWorks (which is a component of Inmagic® Content Server). Thereafter, you can add records directly with the Genie application. Once records are loaded, library staff and end users can start searching your catalog to find records through the Genie application. Library staff, in addition and depending on any permission settings that may be in place, can reserve items, order materials, route serial issues, display and print the results, and much more.

Pointing to the Genie textbases

Note that during the installation process, Setup may have updated the ICSWeb.INI file to point to the empty Genie textbases. If you restored the provided backup file sets to the recommended location, this would be C:\Program Files\Inmagic\Genie\Textbases. If the sample textbases were installed and you want to use them to become familiar with the Genie application, you must update the ICSWeb.INI file to point to the sample textbases. If you restored the provided backup file sets to the recommended location, this would be C:\Program Files\Inmagic\Genie\Textbases\Sample. The ICSWeb.INI file is located in the installation folder for Inmagic® CS/WebPublisher PRO (which is a component of Inmagic® Content Server). You may have to work with the Web server administrator to update the ICSWeb.INI file.

Important! Remember to update the ICSWeb.INI file to point to the real Genie textbases after you are done with the sample textbases. You cannot point to the real and sample textbases in the ICSWeb.INI file at the same time; only one set of Genie textbases can be specified in the INI file.

Note that if, while trying to update the ICSWeb.INI file, Setup detected any textbase with the same name as a Genie textbase, Setup did not update the ICSWeb.INI file for the Genie application. You will have to update the ICSWeb.INI file yourself. Use a text editor (such as Microsoft Notepad) to update the ICSWeb.INI file. Before doing this, ensure that the existing textbase(s) with the same names are not in production (actively being searched through Web browsers). If they are, the name collision will have to be resolved, by renaming your existing textbases.

About the sample textbases

The installation CD-ROM or electronic download (depending on how you receive the product) includes a set of the Genie textbases containing sample data. If the sample textbases were installed, then you can use them to familiarize yourself with the functions and reports in the Genie application.

Regarding pointing the Genie application to the set of textbases you want to use, see Pointing to the Genie textbases.

Accessing the application

After you have completed the installation of the Genie software and textbases (per its installation notes document), you can access the application through Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later, with cookies enabled.

Out of the box, access to the Genie application is controlled through the roles available for the application.

  • Administrators can do everything possible in the Genie application.

  • Catalogers can do everything administrators can do except manage the security and login functions.

  • Staff can do everything catalogers can do except delete records; add or edit Catalog, Orders, or Items records; or configure e-mail settings.

  • Public (end users of your Genie application) can search your catalog and view Summary or Full Display pages (the latter can optionally include circulation information) and use the InfoCart (for example to request, print, download, or send as e-mail a selected list of items). Note that the list of actions exposed in the InfoCart can be limited to suit the library's preferences.

Note: We suggest you use a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels on your Web browser machine, which you can set through the Windows Display Properties dialog box.

For library staff

Open Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later and point to http://<WebServerName>/InmagicGenie. Fill in the host name of your Web server where the Genie application resides. The InmagicGenie virtual directory was created when the Genie application was installed.

Log in by typing a valid user name and password. Note that the role login names can be changed by the administrator.

  • Regular library staff:

    • Username = staff

    • Password = See your library administrator for the password.

  • Catalogers:

    • Username = cataloger

    • Password = See your library administrator for the password.

  • Administrators:

    • Username = admin

    • Password = See your library administrator for the password.

Note: See the Inmagic Genie Security Notes for the out-of-the-box username/password combinations. We recommend you change the passwords at your earliest convenience. To change a login name or password, use the Manage Security & Logins function (choose Other>Manage Security & Logins) and see the Inmagic Genie Security Notes.

For end users

With Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later and with cookies enabled, end users can search your catalog and view Summary or Full Display pages (the latter can optionally include circulation information). They can also request, print, download, or send as e-mail a selected list of items. Note that the list of actions exposed in the InfoCart can be limited to suit the library's preferences.

Create a link on your intranet/extranet pointing to http://<WebServerName>/InmagicGenie/opac.aspx.

Fill in the name of your Web server where the Genie application resides. The InmagicGenie virtual directory was created when the Genie application was installed.

Functions performed with CS/TextWorks

There are several functions that require using CS/TextWorks. This section tells you how to perform these functions.

You will have to use CS/TextWorks to do the following:

  • Add fields to the internal forms used in conjunction with the MyReports.CONFIG file. For more information, see the Inmagic Genie Technical Notes.

  • Import records converted using the MARC Transformer for Inmagic Content Server. To learn how to convert records, see the documentation provided with that product.

  • Edit validation lists. To learn how to do this, see the online help for Content Server.

Note: End users can override and update validation lists when editing records depending on which SOAP files were selected during installation.

  • Change field names in or add fields to Genie textbases. To learn how to do this, see the online help for Content Server and the Inmagic Genie Technical Notes.

  • Import MEDLINE XML files.

To open a Genie textbase on the desktop

  1. Open CS/TextWorks. From the Start menu, choose Programs>Inmagic Applications>Content Server>CSTextWorks.

  2. Open a Genie textbase. Choose File>Open and navigate to where your Genie textbases are located and select one of them (for example, Catalog.CBA).

To import MEDLINE XML files

The Genie application includes a transform that you can use to import MEDLINE XML files. A bibliographic database created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), MEDLINE (Medical Literature, Analysis, and Retrieval System Online) contains references to journal articles in life sciences, especially in the area of biomedicine. You must perform these steps in CS/TextWorks.

  1. Open CS/TextWorks. From the Start menu, choose Programs>Inmagic Applications>Content Server>CSTextWorks.

  2. Open the Genie CATALOG textbase. Choose File>Open, navigate to where your Genie textbases are located, and select Catalog.CBA.

  3. Choose File>Import and select the file containing the MEDLINE XML records on the Select Import File dialog box.

  4. On the Import Options dialog box, do the following:

    • On the File Import tab:

      1. Select the XML option button.

      2. Select the Specify XSL Transform in File option button.

      3. Click the Select Transform File button and the MEDLINE.XSL file (which was installed in the Textbases subfolder of the main Genie installation folder).

    • On the Validation tab: Select the Accept Overrides & Update Validation Lists or Accept Overrides option button, as applicable. We recommend you accept overrides because one of the fields populated from the MEDLINE records is the CatSubjects field in the CATALOG textbase. It has an associated validation list. If you do not accept overrides, the incoming records will most likely be rejected.

  1. Click OK.

  2. Review the settings you selected on the message box that appears, and click Yes if your settings are correct.

  3. Click OK to dismiss the completion message.

Tip! Some MEDLINE records may not adhere to the MEDLINE DTD, which results in a malformed XML file. If the incoming XML file contains flaws, the entire file may be rejected, not just the flawed records within it. If this occurs, try downloading smaller sets of records in an attempt to isolate and exclude the flawed records.

Where do I start?

To start, you may want to do the following:

  1. Add records to the textbases. You can do this manually in the Genie application. Alternatively, you can import your records from an ASCII text file with CS/TextWorks (choose File>Import).

  2. Set up the e-mail function if you plan to use it. To learn how to do this, see the Genie online help.

  3. Set up the security model you plan to use. To learn how to do this, see the Inmagic Genie Security Notes.

  4. Perform your routine library operations. Use the data-entry tips provided on the Genie application. Look at the help topics for specific functions for which you may want guidance (for example, how to set up an arrival pattern, how to add someone to a reserve list). When you do a search, click the Help link in the Search Tips area to access a help topic that provides details on the various methods you can use to perform a search.

  5. Use the various configuration files to change the Genie interface (for example, add boxes to search pages or change report formatting). To learn how to use these configuration files, see the Inmagic Genie Technical Notes.

After installing the software and loading your records into the textbases, you and your end users are ready to use the Genie application. End users can use it to search your online catalog. Library staff can use it to perform functions related to catalog, serials, loans, suppliers, borrower maintenance, and interlibrary lending. The graphical user interface for the Genie application is straightforward and intuitive.

Remember that the Genie application provides you with sample textbases that contain sample records with which you can practice using the product.

What's New in this Version?

Genie version 3.00 has many new and enhanced features. Each feature is discussed briefly here. Where applicable, you are directed to documentation that has more information.

Editing improvements

  • Configurable Edit screens. All Genie edit screens are now user configurable.  As part of this feature, the ability to control when [Browse] links and required field red asterisks appear has been moved out of the GenieFieldMaps.config file and into the new EditScreens.config file.

  • Significant performance improvement. Saving a Catalog record is up to 10 times as fast.

  • Edit pages support persistent values.  As part of configurable edit screens, you can specify that the item in a specific field should "persist".  Each time you create a new record, the box will automatically be populated with the last value you typed in that field.

  • Duplicate button on edit screens. A duplicate button is now available on edit screens for copying Catalog, Item, and Serial records.

OPAC improvements

  • “My Genie”. End users can see information specific to themselves, such as contact information, their open loans, their active reserves, etc. What they can see is configurable.

  • Change/remove Genie branding. End user screens now support the ability to remove or replace the Genie branding.

  • Firefox browsers supported. Firefox browsers can be used in Genie when searching or viewing records. The library staff should continue to use Internet Explorer when editing.

Workflow enhancements

  • Statistics Page. A configurable statistics page that permits the administrator to specify a list of searches to perform (for example, overdue loans, overdue serials, active reserves) with links to View or Print the results, or E-mail them to the appropriate Borrowers or Suppliers

  • BookWhere MARC import support. Genie permits you to upload a BookWhere MARC XML file, and provides an XSL file for use with CS/Importer to import the data into the Catalog textbase.

  • Borrower deletion cleanup.   When a borrower is deleted, the borrower is removed from all Serials routing lists, and all the borrower's active reserves are canceled.

  • Ability to create Catalog & Items records before item is received.  On the Orders edit screen, the Create Catalog Record and Create Item Record(s) buttons have been moved out of the Receiving Information section, so you can now create Catalog and Items records before the item has been received.

Improved Item management

  • Item search screen and reports.  The Catalog section of the menu includes a new Search Items choice, which permits you to search for items by Bar Code and other item fields.  The end user interface also supports the ability to search for items.

  • Support for a large number of items.  It is possible to generate many items at once, create an item record for a serial issue that has just been checked in, page through a large number of items on the Items edit screen, and limit the number of items displayed in a Catalog full report.

  • More Item fields on default Catalog full report. Genie now ships out-of-the-box with additional items showing on the default Catalog Full Report, including ItemCallNumber, ItemVolume, ItemIssue, ItemDate and ItemLoanPolicy. As with other Genie reports, this can be configured.

Table of Contents support

  • Upload a Table of Contents image. Genie now supports uploading a Table of Contents image for a Serials issue. E-mail routing notices can either link to the image or include it as an attachment.

  • Searchable Table of Contents.  The Serials edit screen can be configured to support uploading a document (for example, a PDF file) containing the text of the Table of Contents.  The CS/Importer can be used to extract the full text of the document, so that it is searchable.

  • New ToC textbase. The table of contents file name and, if used, extracted text, are stored in a separate textbase, so that multiple copies of the same subscription can share access to common images. The Serials textbase has a field containing the ID of the most recent uploaded image. The Items textbase has a field for the ID of any previously received issue, for libraries that need to retain this information.

Enhanced configurability

  • Overriding CSS Stylesheets. All Genie pages now call the provided .CSS stylesheet file (for example, Genie.CSS) and a "My" version of the stylesheet (MyGenie.CSS). Users can create a MyGenie.CSS file in the Genie install folder to override any styles in the Genie.CSS file or provide their own. The MyGenie.CSS files will not be overwritten during upgrades.

  • More configurable browser. Genie now uses the CS/WebPublisher PRO index and validation list browser, with all the associated features (setting the number of keys, whether long keys wrap onto a new line, etc.) Also, Browsing a large validation list on an edit screen is much faster, as Content Server version 9 supports paging for validation lists.

  • Reduced dependence on textbase forms. Genie can now request that CS/WebPublisher PRO sort a query result and/or return secondary textbase fields. This eliminates the need to create forms inside a textbase for Genie reports that involve special sorts or linked textbase fields.

  • Image resizing.  Reports including images displayed inline can include width or height specifications.

  • Information flow from Orders to Catalog and Items.  It is possible to specify which Catalog or Items fields are populated in the new records with information from the Order record.  It is also possible to specify a Catalog Record Type for Serials orders.

  • Print Bar Code labels. MyLabels.config now includes a label to print bar code labels using the Free 3 of 9 font, which is available for download.

General

  • Uses .NET Framework v2.0. Genie v3.00 is built on .NET v2.0. Users will need to download and install the freely distributed .NET Framework 2.0 from Microsoft. (www.microsoft.com) before installing Genie.

Issues Resolved

Genie version 3.00 addressed the following issues that were reported against earlier versions of the product. The applicable Inmagic Software Problem Report (SPR) number follows each item listed.

  • Edit Loan Record: Fixed an issue with the "Send e-mail routing notice" link when the INMAGIC.INI file contained OptimizedPhraseSearch=1 [SPR 4008]

  • Edit Order: Addressed a query error with Order Numbers containing search-significant words (for example, 'OR 123456'). [SPR 4321]

  • Edit Order: Addressed an issue with changing the Order Number box contents then adding a new item to the order. [SPR 4362]

  • Edit Order: Genie let you save record when the hidden "About the order" section included empty required fields. [SPR 4451]

  • Full Display: Addressed an issue with the Full Display page using invalid HTML; this issue was not visible on the screen. [SPR 4371]

  • Search screens: If the page only had one box, Enter didn't submit the query. [SPR 4393]

  • Apostrophes: Addressed problems on Order, Serials, and ILL Edit pages for Supplier/Borrower/Lender names containing apostrophes. [SPR 4452]

  • Edit Items: Addressed an issue with updating the Catalog Location field when the Catalog record had more Locations than were shown in all of the associated Items records.  This operation should add to the Catalog Location list, not replace it. [SPR 4464]

  • Manage Security & Logins: Addressed an issue where editing an existing user who had already specified a password would reset the password to **** in the textbase, causing "Invalid password. Please try again." the next time that user tried to log in.  [SPR 4663]

  • Edit ILL Request: Addressed an issue with Lender names containing strings that could be mistaken for leading articles. [SPR 3680]

  • Printed Routing Lists: One routing list is printed now for each checked-in issue. [SPR 3929]

  • InfoCart: The Download (XML) format is now more consistent with other Inmagic XML output. [SPR 4179]
